Tagging Project

We have joined forces with The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Thai Sharks and Rays, Love Wildlife Foundation and MARECO to start a tagging project for whale sharks in the Gulf of Thailand

What is tagging?

Tagging of sharks and other animals allows researchers to track and monitor their movement.

This is important as it helps to understand

  • their movement

  • areas of interest/protection

  • their trajectory over time and changes to it

With this information better collaborations and relationships can be built with neighbouring countries to preserve and protect the species.

How does it work?

The tag weighs 77g and measures just 14.5cm in length.

The tag is inserted into the shark just beneath the dorsal fin. The SPOT 426 tag will transmit data to the Argos satellite system when at the surface.

The data received will be close to real time and accurate to within 250 m.

Why is it important?

Understanding the movement of whale sharks is vital in protecting this endangered species.

By knowing where they travel to we can work with neighbouring countries to provide better protection as well as build collaborations.

It will also allow us to understand why individuals seen in Thailand are only seen for a very short period before they disappear.
